Meals on Wheels of the Sandhills Serves the Communities of Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, and Pinebluff, NC.
Meals on Wheels of the Sandhills, Inc., began in 1974 by Ida Baker Scott for five of her friends who needed a hot, nourishing meal. Today, we have more than 90 dedicated volunteers who donate their time and use of their vehicles to deliver an average of 100 meals each weekday, 260 days a year to those in need. Each year approximately 23,000 meals are prepared and delivered.
A person is eligible to receive meals if they are homebound and unable to have meals prepared or unable to prepare meals for themselves. We do not have financial or age restrictions and we receive no government funding. “Meals on Wheels of the Sandhills” is a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization depending entirely on private monetary help to exist.
Individuals who receive meals are referred to us by the Department of Aging & Social Services, FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Home Health Agencies, Doctors, Nurses, Churches and other responsible parties, neighbors or friends.
The hot meals are prepared by the kitchen staff at Penick Village in Southern Pines, accommodating for nutritional requirements such as diabetic and mechanically softened foods. The lunch-time meals are delivered Monday through Friday, including weekday holidays and the cost of each meal is $2.75.
Volunteers pick up the meals, which are in insulated containers, from Penick Village around 11am each morning, Monday through Friday. They deliver the meals according to their designated team’s route sheet then return the containers back to Penick when they are done. The whole process takes about 1 -2 hours.
In addition to receiving a hot meal, our Recipients also enjoy fellowship with our caring Volunteers. Our daily visits help give families and friends of recipients peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are safe and sound for another day.
The Meals on Wheels Executive Director is Rebecca Listrom and is the only paid staff person for the entire organization. There are 9 Board Members whom assist with the governing and financial components of Meals on Wheels.
Finally, we are a United Way agency and as such, have been awarded a significant grant each fiscal year. In 2011, United Way provided a grant totaling $20,000, an amount of more than one-fourth of our annual budget of $74,000.
